Chapter Thirty Three

Mario

Mario pulled up to the intersection and slowed down. He saw the truck parked there, but even knowing he had the right of way, it made him nervous. They were on the back roads outside town, there wasn’t much cause for a truck to be way out here. He proceeded forward, but kept a close eye on the truck. As soon he moved through the intersection, the truck lurched forward, and sped towards them.

Mario did the only thing he could think of, he pushed down on the gas, forcing his car faster. It was obvious the truck had been waiting for them, and he knew if it hit the driver's door, he was done for. He felt relief when the truck hit the back door, just as he had hoped. He wouldn’t be any help to his Angel dead. But the impact sent his head flying into the side window. He felt the blood, as it dripped down his head, and could do nothing as his car was pushed into the ditch. Then his world turned black.

He couldn’t have been out long when he slowly woke. He blinked several times, and his head pounded. Then he heard his Angel screaming and calling his name. He forced the fuzziness away and concentrated on clearing his vision.

Horrified, he watched, as Alexandria clung to the steering wheel, gripping it with everything she had. A man dressed entirely in black was leaning in the car and had his hands wrapped around her waist. It looked like he was trying to wrench her from the vehicle, and Mario saw red.

Moving quickly, he reached his right hand under his jacket, and pulled out the gun he always kept there. As soon as the fucker leaned back to pull again, Mario raised the gun and fired. He had to be incredibly careful as his Angel was blocking most of the man’s body. He watched in satisfaction as the man screamed and let his girl go. Then he grabbed at his arm and disappeared into the trees. Mario wanted to fire more, but he wouldn’t risk his Angel.

His poor girl was screaming and crying all at once and hadn’t let up on her grip of the wheel. He soothed her with calming words, trying to tell her it was okay, and stroked her hair. He breathed a sigh of relief when she finally quieted and let go of the wheel. A minute later, she lifted her tear-stained face and looked at him.

That was when his men made it to them and surrounded the car. He never took his eyes off his Angel as he barked out orders.

“Trent, stay with us, send the rest of the men into the woods. He’s wearing all black, and he’s on foot”, Mario instructed. “I got him in the arm, but that shouldn’t slow him any. Shoot to kill,” he ordered.

“I’ve called Steele,” Trent told him. “He’s on his way with Doc and few men, he’ll be here in a minute.”

Mario nodded at him, then smiled down at his Angel.
